Water Seepage Management Solution
NPE’s client recognised the need for a robust water seepage management system to mitigate potential flood risks to the Wedgefield industrial area. This requirement emerged alongside the dredging works, which were expected to raise water levels in the Dredge Material Management Areas, thereby increasing groundwater levels due to seepage.
NPE was engaged to provide a comprehensive water seepage management solution throughout the dredging operations, with the primary goal of preventing flooding in the Wedgefield industrial area.
NPE's scope of work was divided into two distinct stages:
1. Design and Installation: This stage involved the complete design and installation of the seepage control system, which included spear points, associated pipework, and pumping infrastructure.
2. Monitoring, Operation, and Management: After installation, this stage focuses on the ongoing monitoring, operation, management, and routine maintenance of the seepage control system, including its decommissioning upon project completion.
The specific dewatering activities carried out by NPE for this project included:
- The installation and subsequent removal of spear pump systems in the designated eastern and western sections.
- The installation of a sacrificial dewatering system in the central section.
- Continuous daily operation of all pumping systems for 70 days, which included pumps, piping, fuel, consumables, and 24/7 maintenance support.
- The supply and installation of individual alarm systems for remote water level monitoring.
- The extraction and pumping of collected water back into the dredging pond.
- The implementation of a comprehensive cyclone emergency preparedness plan.
